On 18 May, research scientist Dmitry Titov took part in a special session of the Innovation Working Group of Volgogradenergo, one of our Center’s crucial industrial partners.

This interactive and forward-looking meeting highlighted the critical role of research and development and its still largely untapped potential for Russian industry. Additionally, the session raised the subject of expertise transfer to younger generation of the company’s employees.

Dmitry Titov was invited to give a presentation about our partnership with Volgogradenergo, where he elaborated on icing monitoring and demonstrated developed equipment. He further suggested topics for joint research for the upcoming year, such as automation of primary data collection during air power line inspections.

We are now working on proposals for new projects with Volgogradenergo as follow-up to the session.

Building on the success of existing partnerships, the Center for Energy Systems is significantly expanding cooperation with industry. Recently, Dmitry Titov, a CES research scientist, has been invited to take part in the second meeting of the joint working group between Russian power company PJSC ROSSETI and Italian transmission grid operator TERNA SpA.

The session took place in Moscow, on 13 February, 2018 and brought together industry leaders and representatives of academia to discuss common concerns and goals. Several distinguished guests, including Deputy Director for PJSC ROSSETI’s Strategic Development Evgenii Olkhovich and Director for Technological Development and Innovations Vladimir Sofyin, attended the meeting. The opening presentation was delivered by Dmitry Titov, focusing on icing diagnostics. The participants also dealt with network drives as well as digitalization in power plants and electricity networks.

TERNA SpA showed considerable enthusiasm for icing diagnosctics. Following the session, a Russian-Italian Working Group was created. It features Enrico Carpini, the TERNA’s Director for Network Planning and Connections; Karlo Sabelli, the Head of the Operational Department of TERNA; Bogdan Goroshkevich, the Deputy Director of the ROSSETI’s R&D Department; Ryabin Timofei, the Deputy Director of the Federal Grid Company of Unified Energy System, Joint Stock Company. The Center for Energy Systems is represented by Dmitry Titov.

The meeting provided an excellent opportunity for open dialogue about our future collaborations with TERNA SpA. With 63,500 kilometers of power lines or around 98% of the Italian high-voltage power transmission grid, it is the first independent electricity transmission grid operator in Europe and the sixth in the world based on the size of its electrical grid. Discussing a roadmap is scheduled on March 1, 2018.

Dmitry Titov, a Research Scientists with the Center for Energy Systems, attended the 11th session of the Intergovernmental Russian-Danish Economic Cooperation Council, held in Moscow on 7 February.

The forum is known to give state officials, business leaders, and experts a platform to share their views on pressing issues in our relations in an unbiased manner. This year, the program included sessions focused on bilateral cooperation in agricultural industry, energy efficiency, transport, etc. The Council featured high-ranking statesmen:  Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen led the Danish delegation, Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov headed the Russian delegation. Alexander Abramov, the Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Energy of Russia, and Sergey Morozov, the Governor of the Ulyanovsk region, attended this session too.

The event offered an excellent opportunity to make business connections and catch up with members of the Council. During the networking banquet at the “President-hotel”,  Dmitry Titov had a chance to speak about our latest development on  icing monitoring. The Danish trade mission in Moscow asked questions about our work and expressed interest in continuing communication with the Center for Energy Systems.

Dmitry Titov represented CES at the second session of the Club “Innovations in Electrical Energy Industry,” held in Moscow on 25 December. It attracted many participants representing leading power generating and grid companies as well as government agencies, such as the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the NP Market Council, the Council of Power producers, Gazprom, EuroSibEnergo, Rosnano, Rusal, etc.

Introducing an innovative product involves several stages: development, commercialization, and implementation. Firms that are intensively engaged in the activity find many obstacles along this way. Chaired by EuroSibEnergo in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy, the Club intends to address common problems in the framework of five working groups: Government Support, Science and Business Interaction, Commercialization, Open Innovations, Inter-Industry Cooperation. During its sessions power generating and grid companies, academia, developers, and state officials brainstorm on innovations in the electrical energy industry in Russia.

Taking part in this session paved the way for our cooperation with Sevkabel, one of the largest manufacturers of cables and wires in Russia. Its representatives were interested in using laboratory facilities of the Center for Energy Systems and methods developed by our research scientists to test their products with anti-icing properties. A meeting to discuss a roadmap for a future partnership followed soon after: Irina Lukicheva and Dmitry Titov went to Saint Petersburg to visit Sevkabel’s factory. Together with its experts, our Center applied for a grant from the Ministry of Education whose mission is to support strategic scientific and technological developments in Russia. The proposed research focuses on increasing the observability and adaptability of overhead power transmission lines in locations with extreme meteorological conditions.

Chaired by EuroSibEnergo in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation, the Club aims to brainstorm on innovations with power generating and grid companies, academia, developers, and state officials. This time, participants talked about prospects of the electrical energy industry over the coming years and what projects and solutions it needs at present.

The meeting was opened by the Head of the Department for Operational Control and Management in the Electric Power Industry of the Ministry of Energy Evgeny Grabchak. He noted: “It isabsolutely necessary to support innovations that optimize current technological activities and allow companies to reduce the operational costs and therefore increase their competitiveness.”

The event presented an excellent opportunity to discuss projects of our Center with industrial partners as well as to get feedback on its implementation. We hope that the Club will act as a successful convening platform that will unite academia, companies and government institutions in their effort to modernize the electrical energy industry in Russia.

The next session of the Club is scheduled on December 25. Dmitry Titov is going to present our Center’s developments at this event.
