On December 22, 2016, the Skoltech Center for Energy Systems together with Thermal Motors and field experts from Skolkovo Foundation, Nissan Motor Manufacturing, and HMS Group have held the commencement event of the research and development project. By the end of July 2017, the project aims to develop and put in operation at the Skoltech Center for Energy Systems Lab an experimental test unit based on the external heating thermal motor.

The results of the R&D project will be used to conduct research studies in the area of distributed conventional and renewable energy applications, relevant for the economic development of the Russian Federation.

Project outcomes have fundamental relevance for the development of novel external heating conversion technologies, which can be fuelled with the concentrated solar heat, the combustion heat of biomass (e.g. wood pellets), waste heat, etc. to efficiently produce mechanical, electrical and thermal energy. The project is specifically relevant for the improvement of conversion efficiencies in energy units based on Stirling-cycle thermal motors.

This project is the result of a two-year research collaboration between Skoltech and Thermal Motors LLC, a company co-founded by Skoltech alumnus Dmitry Smirnov. The company will equip the experimental test unit with the thermal motor as an in-kind contribution to the Skoltech Center for Energy Systems.
