A paper dedicated to Skoltech researcher Ekaterina Savitskaya (passed away in October, 2019) was published in Communications Biology journal. The article entitled “Mapping CRISPR spaceromes reveals vast host-specific viromes of prokaryotes” was co-authored by professor Konstantin Severinov. The researchers performed a deep analysis of nucleotide sequences of spacers in CRISPR loci and revealed that most spacers originate from viromes of host cells, while self-targeting spacers undergo strong negative selection.
