Mikhail Gelfand gave a comment on the novel criminalistics project to Gazeta.ru

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia announced that artificial intelligence will soon be used in profiling the offender on the basics of molecular samples obtained from a crime scene. The project realized by the Center of genetics and reproductive medicine “Genetico” till December 25, 2021. Mikhail Gelfand gave a comment on this project to Gazeta.ru. He explained that reconstructing the identikit from genetic data is impossible. Professor Gelfand noted that molecular information obtained from blood, sperm and other biological entities found in the crime scene has been used in criminalistics for many years. He says that some phenotype characteristics including skin, hair and eye color, body type and height can be obtained from DNA, but some important features such as age cannot be retrieved from biological data. In the USA, the analogous project failed due to its high cost and moderate outcome . Professor Gelfand thinks that profiling a realistic and useful identikit on the basics of molecular data is impossible. Full text of the interview is available here.
