Konstantin Severinov gave a comment on the ongoing project on mammoth cloning to Lenta.ru

The idea of resurrecting the  extinct biological species, such as mammoth, passenger pigeon or even dinosaurs is not novel. But now, when the genome sequences of extinct species are known, this idea looks more realistic. American biotechnology company Colossal Biosciences is going to clone and grow up mammoth and passenger pigeon that was exterminated in XIX century. The leading scientists of the project, professor George Church, says that the first mammoth will be created in 4-6 years. Then, the resurrected mammoth is going to be introduced to Pleistocene park in Yakutia. Konstantin Severinov gave a comment on this project to Lenta.ru. He claims that the project with 15 million $ budget looks unreal and, moreover, the problem of mammoth cloning is still unsolvable even with modern methods and technologies. Professor Severinov explained that the workflow of mammoth resurrection via introducing “mammoth’s” mutations in the elephant genome is extremely sophisticated and the result is unpredictable. He believes that resurrection of species that have become extinct in the recent years due to human activity is much more useful and realistic. Full text of the interview is available here.
