About the speaker:
Prof. Dr. habil. Arkady Shipulin (Chipouline) has received his Ph. D. in Laser Physics and Engineering at the Moscow Physical Technical University in 1995. Since 2018 Year, he works as an Associated Director of the Center for Photonics and Quantum Material at Skoltech. Prof. Shipilin is a coordinator of working group of Photonics in BRICS, member of multiple R&D committees in Russia and abroad, reviewer of international journals etc. Before that, from 2015, he was a Team Leader at the Institute for Microwave Engineering and Photonics, Department of Electrical Engineering, Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. He acquired his international experience also during his work at University of Salt Lake City (USA) in 1999-2001, Telecommunication Industry in the USA (CORVIS Corporation, recipient of an Award of Excellence) in 2001-2005, and at the Friedrich-Schiller University of Jena, Germany in 1995-1999 and 2005-2014. Prof. Shipulin’s current areas of research interests include various application of photonic integrated circuits, hybrid photonic structures (nanoplasmonics, optical metamaterials, and microresonators combined with quantum dots, carbon nano tubes etc.) in fiber optic telecom and optical sensors; laser physics und optoelectronics, optical waveguides, optical amplifiers, nonlinear optics etc. More academically oriented interests are focused in area of fundamentals of electrodynamics. His teaching interest is in elaboration of modern theoretical and practical courses in response to the modern scientific and technological challenges

Abstract:
The digital transformation of the economy and society leads to qualitatively new demands for technologies that “serve” humans. In the twentieth century, the answer to such demands was electronics, based on technologies for creating electronic integrated circuits.
In the twenty-first century, such an end-to-end key technology is photonics. The main “anchor” technology in this case is the technology of photonic integrated circuits – PIC, similar to integrated circuits in microelectronics. Economically justified PIC production can be established in form of an ecosystem – in analogy with its electronic counterpart.
In my presentation, I discuss the first steps made towards to the creation of this ecosystem.
1. The main customer for PICs is now the optical communication systems of different types. As an introduction, I present an overview of current state of the art of these systems focusing on PIC applications.
2. We at Skoltech have created the basis for such a domestic ecosystem – the professional Design Center for PIC design and production. Working with the world’s leading manufacturers, we have demonstrated the first chips – passive and active components of all required types. Progress in further development of this Design Center will be discussed.
3. Results of completed and ongoing industrial projects in area of PICs will be presented:
• Tunable laser.
• QKD transmitter.
• Wavelength synchronization.
• Optical transceiver.
4. Results of more academic as well as related to PICs projects will be presented:
• SHM for ship monitoring.
• SHM for oil distillation tower.
• Vortices in free space and on-chip communication.
• VCSEL based optical transistor.
• Anapole laser dynamics.
