On the 29th of March 2023, as part of the Photonics Seminar Series, we will have the pleasure to welcome Prof. Vsevolod Belousov, who will deliver a talk entitled Thermogenetics: state-of-the-art and perspectives. He will discuss his research group’s latest achievements in thermogenetics and share ideas on future prospects.
When: On the 29th of March 2023, Wednesday, at 17:00 MSK time
Where: New Campus room E-B2-3007 / BigBlueButton
Vsevolod Belousov graduated from MSU with a degree in Biology and later obtained his Doctor of Science degree in Biological sciences. In 2016 he received the title of Professor of the RAS, and in 2019 – a prestigious award from the Society for Redox Biology & Medicine Discovery, USA. He is currently the Director of the Federal Center for Brain and Neurotechnologies, Moscow, Russia, and the Head of department of metabolism and redox biology, Shemyakin and Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Moscow, Russia.
Prof. Belousov is a specialist in the field of molecular physiology, neurobiology and optical bioimaging. He has authored more than 100 scientific papers and 5 patents. The achievements of his group in the field of redox biology and fluorescent microscopy include development of sensors for important redox active compounds within living cells, novel tools for optogenetics, new methods of super resolution microscopy etc.
Thermogenetics is a new promising approach to control functions of cells and tissues using combination of temperature sensitive TRP channels and various heat sources like infrared radiation, microwaves, or focused ultrasound. In my talk, I will describe our latest achievements in thermogenetics, such as control over intracellular calcium levels, insulin release, heart rate, and brain function. I will also share my thoughts on what makes thermogenetics one of the most promising future modalities for treatment of various diseases.
