Nonlinear coupling of photons via a collective mode of transparent superconductor

Abstract:
At the first glance, the expression “transparent superconductor” may seem an oxymoron. Still, the first principle calculations and experiments that can be found in the literature show that the materials that behave as superconductors at low frequencies and do not absorb in the optical domain do exist. Virtual Raman excitation of the collective modes of such superconductors in a magnetic field appears as an efficient way to realize the nonlinear interaction of light at the level of two single photons propagating in an optical fiber, and thereby to perform a gate operation on the polarization variables of optical photons. This process develops at typical distances of cm-scale, which corresponds to a giant nonlinear coupling constant χ_3, by seven orders of magnitude exceeding that of typical nonlinear materials.
