SEMINAR ABSTRACT

Hybrid nanostructures of 2D materials and ultrathin metal films have many attractive properties and potential applications in nanophotonics and optoelectronics. However, successful application of such hybrid nanostructures requires an understanding of the growth mechanisms of metal films on 2D materials. Thus, for example, the addition of just a single layer of graphene on a substrate completely alters growth kinetics of metals, which in turn strongly influences their structural, optical, and electrical properties. Here, we present a detailed study on the growth of ultrathin metal films on different 2D materials and the properties of these hybrid nanostructures. We analyze the crystalline structure, optical, and electrical properties of metal films depending on deposition regimes and their thicknesses, which is of vital importance for the development of photonic and optoelectronic systems based on metal-2D materials nanostructures.

 

BIO

Valentyn S. Volkov, born in 1977, is an Associate Professor at the Center for Nano Optics, University of Southern Denmark. He received the M.Sc. degree (in Physics) in 2000 from Moscow State University (Russia) and obtained his Ph.D. in 2003 from Aalborg University (Denmark). In 2014, he became head of the Laboratory of Nanooptics and Plasmonics, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (Russia). His current research interests include linear and nonlinear nano-optics and physics of surface plasmon polaritons (including plasmonic circuits and field enhancement effects for bio- and molecular sensing), 2D materials, and graphene-based devices.
