 Abstract:

The emerging Internet of Things (IoT) requires a robust and low latency network with ubiquitous and ultra-high speed mobile Internet access. Such a network is composed of various building blocks with different technologies including radio stations, routers/switches, fiber-optical networks, synchronization systems and network control/management platforms. The full technological potential of each individual building must be exploited and a most efficient and reliable interplay between all modules must be realized. The fiber-optical platform plays a major role as it is the core of this network.

This talk starts with service applications in the digital era. Related bandwidth and latency requirements are highlighted. Key features of the various mobile technology generations (2G up to 6G) are indicated. Next the interfaces (plus related standards) between the different building blocks are illustrated. Various optical technologies plus architectures for future-proof 4G/5G/6G networks are described and compared in detail,  corresponding new optical devices and network design schemes are presented. The trade-off between complexity (and cost) and performance of individual technologies and of the whole system is highlighted for some characteristic use cases.

Finally, a way forward is indicated how an industrial environment may be established that enables the development of own technologies and products and how to avoid a vendor lock-in or other painful external dependencies. Prospects for future technological developments and service applications are presented.

BIO:

Arnold Mattheus studied Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science at Germany’s University of Kaiserslautern and received his diploma and doctorate degrees (PhD) in 1981 and 1987, respectively. Since 1987, he has been with Deutsche Telekom, namely until 1991 in Berlin and since 1991 in Darmstadt. He has been working on Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) networks, high-speed optical transmission including dispersion managed soliton propagation, IP-over-DWDM networks, international standardization as Deutsche Telekom (DT) delegate at various forums (e.g. ITU-T, IETF, OpenROADM), optical metro and access platforms for mobile edge (4G, 5G) applications, service provisioning solutions including Ethernet over SDH/OTN, open optical networking and related software defined network (SDN) approaches. He was involved in DT’s Technical Specifications (TS) and Request for Quotations (RfQ) for the technologies and network architectures mentioned above. Furthermore, Arnold Mattheus was DT’s chair of the NTT-DT R&D cooperation on IP-Optical networks. He participated in various national and European R&D projects, and he gave lectures on Optical Communications at the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt and for other organizations.
