Ivan Laptev and Petr Sergiev from Skoltech have co-authored a paper “Mechanism of mitoribosomal small subunit biogenesis and preinitiation” that has been recently published in Nature! The paper focuses of the mitoribosomes and special features of mitochondrial translation. The scientists use cryo-electron microscopy to determine a series of the small mitoribosomal subunit (SSU) intermediates in complex with auxiliary factors, revealing a sequential assembly mechanism. They unveil every step of biogenesis of small subunit of mitochondrial ribosome, as well as the first steps of preinitiaition in mitochondrial translation. Congratulations!
