Space tether systems

We will discuss potential applications of space tether systems, including removal of space debris, atmosphere studies, and satellite formation flying. In particular, we will describe a new hub-and-spoke formation which consists of a main body (hub) connected by means of tethers with several deputy satellites. Such a formation can be used for simultaneous 3D-probing of the near-Earth environment; also the collocation with the existing satellite on the geostationary orbit is possible – in this case the hub-and-spoke formation “envelops” it. We demonstrate an opportunity to adjust the parameters of the formation so that its components perform free periodic oscillations without colliding with each other or with the central satellite.
