PhD position in the Skoltech Center for Energy Systems jointly with Fondazione Bruno Kessler

Skoltech Center for Energy Systems (CES) of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, Skoltech, Moscow, Russia, together with the Applied Research on Energy Systems (ARES) unit of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK), Trento, Italy, is seeking candidates for one PhD position in the field of Ceramic composites for SOFC electrodes.

Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) is a unique English-speaking international graduate research university, located in Skolkovo, just outside of Moscow, Russia. Applying international interdisciplinary research and educational models, the university integrates the best Russian scientific traditions with twenty-first century entrepreneurship and innovation. Established in 2011 in collaboration with MIT, Skoltech will advance scientific knowledge, educate global leaders in innovation and foster new technologies to address critical issues facing Russia and the world. The research will be focused on the study of behavior of ceramic composites for SOFC electrodes. In particular, it will be investigated the structural evolution of the SOFC electrodes in different conditions of flow, fuel utilization, temperature, using 3D tomography. The activity will comprise the design, realization and testing of a proper test bench where to perform 3D computer tomography in situ and at operating condition (e.g. hot cell) with coherent light emission (e.g. synchrotron or in situ source device) as well as the development and validation of mechanism evolution model for long term cycle of full SOFC cell. It will comprise the collaboration in FBK with ARES for the prototyping and testing, with 3DOM for the data analysis and image reconstruction, with MNF for the structural characterization of the electrodes, pre- and post-testing. Modelling work, based on the developed know how, could also be performed aiming at the SOFC performance characterization and its techno-economic assessment.

The student is expected to spend half of his time at Skoltech in Moscow (Russian Federation) and half at Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Trento (Italy); the awarded degree will be Russian and offered scholarship is competitive with European Union standards.
